NDM launches Mental Health awareness training opportunities for staff click to find more details

Let’s talk about Mental Health

The Nuffield Department of Medicine strives to create an environment in which its staff can fully engage, develop and flourish. In support of this goal we are excited to be launching a campaign to raise awareness of mental health in the workplace.

In partnership with Mental Health First Aid England (MHFA), NDM is providing training over the next 12 months designed to equip staff with the skills to recognise and respond to the signs and symptoms of mental health problems or crises. We will also be developing a network of Mental Health Allies across NDM with the aim of raising awareness, reducing stigma and improving peer support for our staff.

Training opportunities

There will be two courses on offer: an introductory awareness session and full Mental Health Ally training. Initially, these courses will be available to NDM staff only.

1) Mental Health Aware - This introductory four-hour mental health awareness session is suitable for all staff and is designed to give:

  • - An understanding of what mental health is and how to challenge stigma;
  • - An introduction to looking after your own mental health and maintaining wellbeing; and
  • - Confidence to support someone in distress or who may be experiencing a mental health issue.

The training will be delivered online. Numbers are limited to 25 people per course, on a first come first served basis. We have initially secured two dates:

Wednesday 14th October starting at 1pm and Thursday 12th November starting at 10am.

How to book: If you would like to attend one of these above sessions please email

learning.development@ndm.ox.ac.uk and indicate your preferred date. We will then be in touch with further details.

2) Mental Health Ally - This more in depth qualification will be delivered over 4 modules (online) and will be limited to 16 people. The first opportunity to attend this training will be in early December. Further details and information on how to express interest in becoming a Mental Health Ally will be circulated in due course.

For all training opportunities we hope to engage as diverse a range of people as possible and particularly welcome LGBTQIA+ and BAME staff.
