NDM Health and Wellbeing Support

NDM and the wider University offers support for staff to stay mentally and physically healthy.

NDM Mental Health Allies 

NDM Mental Health Allies (MHAs) have completed a two-day mental health first-aid training course, accredited by Mental Health England.  After completing the training, the MHAs will be equipped with the skills to recognise and respond to the signs and symptoms of mental health problems or crises. Occupational Health 

Working with the Universities’ policies and process, Occupational Health provide a service that promotes and preserves the physical and mental wellbeing of staff. It also assists in detecting and preventing ill health in the workplace

Referrals - HR may be in touch with you to recommend a referral to Occupational Health is made or you may want to discuss making an occupational health referral for a member of staff, if so, please contact the Employee Relations partner in the first instance. Alternatively, an employee may refer themselves for Occupational Health advice and guidance, however in these instances management will not be notified and therefore recommendations will not be shared. Employee Counselling Service 

As part of the University's insurance policy through Zurich, a free confidential counselling service is available for staff and members of their immediate family (provided they live in the same household and are over the age of 18 or aged between 16-18 and are in full-time employment).  For more information, see Employee counselling service | Occupational Health Service (ox.ac.uk) 

Stress 

If stress is sustained over a long period, it can have a significant impact on physical and mental health, work performance and morale. The effects of stress in the workplace include increased absence, reduced morale, poor employee relations, a decline in work performance and efficiency, and higher staff turnover. Reducing and preventing work-related stress therefore brings clear benefits to employers as well as to staff. Guidance for managers is available in the University’s Work-Related Stress portal.  If you have any cases of stress reported to you, we ask that you seek advice from the NDM Employee Relations Partner

Sleepio 

Occupational Health Serprvices have teamed up with leading experts to help staff assess and improve their sleep. Sleepio teaches proven techniques to help people overcome even long-term poor sleep problems. For more information, see Sleepio | Occupational Health Service (ox.ac.uk) 

Menopause at Work 

The Medical Sciences Division has produced some guidance for managers on supporting women experiencing the menopause. The role of line managers in supporting staff or students experiencing menopausal symptoms is crucial.  Effective management of women with menopausal symptoms which are impacting their work will help you to improve your team’s morale, retain valuable skills and talent and reduce sickness absence.
